The 21-Hour Work Week: Could It Work?

January 23, 2012 in Gen Y

Recently, a friend sent me an article, “The Case For a 21-Hour Work Week” and I knew I had to toss out this question:
If there were only 21 hours in a work week instead of the standard 40, do you think you would get more, or less done?
And why?
When I was still in the corporate space, I resented how much time I was forced to spend in a structured, office, environment. I knew there were a lot of things I could have done a lot faster from home, but the attitude of “what if something happens?” thwarted my attempt to reduce the days in my work week.

These days, with all of our connectivity devices, there is no need for “work” to look the same way that it did 40, 30, or even 20 years ago. We have advanced so far in technology, that the way we “work” can look like anything we imagine it to be.

So what holds us back from reshaping the future?

Is it some dim hope that slowly, growing economy will only boom if we work the way that we did in the 90s’? Is clinging on to the archaic corporate model the only way we know how to make money?

I think not.

I truly believe that our generation is sitting on the verge of something good. I think we have the power, and the imagination to change the world of work. If not only to be the first generation that actually obtains work/life balance, but to be the people who innovate, and imagine something new that can reduce the strain on our planet.

It’s a huge challenge, but  I think we are up to it. Do you?
